AI models
Choose which AI model runs your tasks from the chat, or run tasks on your own Anthropic or OpenRouter key.
Meelu's agent runs on a large language model, an AI model that reads and writes text. You choose which one. Different models trade off cost, speed and quality, and Meelu shows you the price of each before you pick.
You pay what the model costs, from your credits, with no markup. Or you can use your own Anthropic or OpenRouter key and pay that provider directly.
Pick a model in the chat
In the task panel, next to the send button, there is a small model menu. It shows the model your next task will use. Open it to pick another. The menu groups models under Recommended, Well-known providers and Other models, and shows each one's input and output price per million tokens.
The model you pick stays your default. Every new task uses it until you pick a different one. A task that has already started keeps the model it started with.
A token is a small piece of text, about three quarters of a word. in is the price for what Meelu sends the model: your message, plus the pages and data it reads to answer. out is the price for what the model writes back. Most of a task's cost is usually input, because Meelu reads a lot to give a grounded answer.
When to switch models
Use a cheaper model for simple lookups, like "list my broken pages". Use a stronger model for planning and writing, like "plan a page for this cluster", where quality matters more than cost.
Use your own key
Meelu can run tasks on your own Anthropic or OpenRouter API key. Model calls then go to that provider and are billed to your account there, not your Meelu credits.
Create a key
Create an API key in your Anthropic Console or OpenRouter account, and add a payment method or credits there.
Save it on Connections
In Meelu, click Connections. On the Your own model key card, choose the LLM provider, paste the key into API key and click Save key. Meelu checks the key before saving it. When it works, you see Saved, applies to the next task.
Pick one of its models
Your key's models now appear in the model menu in the chat, under Your Anthropic key or Your OpenRouter key. Pick one, and new tasks run on your key until you pick another.
Good to know:
- Keyword data, web searches and page classification still use credits, because they run on Meelu's servers.
- If you remove the key your default was on, new tasks go back to a Meelu model.
- On a Claude Max or Team plan, you may be able to claim monthly API credits for your Anthropic key. The card has a Claim credits link that explains how.
